Capsule Geology

Lower Jurassic Hazelton Group rocks are intruded by a Lower Jurassic or younger hornblende diorite intrusion along the east shores of Barb Lake. Disseminated pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite occur within the hornblende diorite near the contact with gritty greywacke of the Unuk River Formation. Just south-southeast of this showing silicified and pyritized andesite of the Unuk River Formation hosts abundant disseminated pyrite. This area is characterized by oxidized and silicified rocks which were initially prospected by the Sulphurettes Prospecting Syndicate in 1934.

In 1982, American Fibre Corporation conducted a geochemical sampling and geophysical surveying program on the SIB 1-16 claims and minor prospecting on the SIB 1-16 and POLO 1-8 claims.

The area around Barb Lake was explored in 1987 by Silver Princess Resources. They reported siliceous andesite or possibly a quartz feldspar porphyry with quartz eyes, weak pyrite, trace of galena and spots of hematite in vugs (Assessment Report 19374).

In 2001, in the Barb Lake area, St. Andrews Goldfields conducted a stream sediment sampling program on its Tag West and Tag East Groups; on Tag West: 45 Bulk Leach Extractable Gold, 50 Sieved Silt and 3 Heavy Mineral samples were taken. On the Tag East Group, 21 BLEG, 22 Sieved Silt and 9 Heavy Mineral samples were taken.

In 2020, Eskay Mining Corp. completed a program of prospecting, rock sampling, ground and airborne geophysical surveys and 4335 metres of diamond drilling in 20 holes on the area as part of the Sib-Corey-North Mitchell property. The geophysical surveys consisted of a 911.7 line-kilometre airborne electromagnetic survey, a 55.85 line-kilometre induced polarization survey and a 43.19 line-kilometre magnetotelluric survey. Drilling was performed on the TV (MINFILE 104B 385) and Jeff (MINFILE 104B 525) occurrences.
